CBP Reminds Day of the Dead Travelers of Flower and Fruit Bans at U.S. Border

The seasonal notice cites invasive pests that threaten U.S. agriculture.

Overview

  • CBP says cempasúchil marigolds, chrysanthemums, ornamental vegetation such as Murraya (orange jasmine), and fruits are prohibited at ports including San Ysidro and Otay Mesa.
  • Travelers must declare all plant and agricultural items when entering from Mexico by marking “Yes” to question 11 on CBP Form 6059B.
  • Prohibited goods can be seized or refused entry, with fines starting at $300 for personal violations and reaching $250,000 for commercial imports.
  • Roses, carnations and some other flowers may be admitted after inspection, while potted plants face restrictions and soil from Mexico is not allowed.
  • CBP directs the public to the USDA APHIS website for the full list of rules as interim deputy commissioner John Modlin urges responsible observance to avoid ecological and economic harm.
