CBI Widens Lucknow Narcotics Bribery Probe With New Arrests as CBN Acts

Disciplinary action followed, signaling a widening probe into an alleged codeine-syrup extortion network.

Overview

  • The CBI arrested a third Central Bureau of Narcotics inspector, Adarsh Yogi, along with Sunil Jaiswal and Subhash Jaiswal, as part of the growing bribery case.
  • A day earlier, CBN inspectors Mahipal Singh and Ravi Ranjan and nursing-home owner Gayasuddin Ahmad were held, with investigators recovering ₹10 lakh allegedly paid as a bribe.
  • The FIR cites Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 7, 8 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, naming multiple accused and unidentified others.
  • Investigators say the officials demanded money to avoid implicating Ahmad in a probe tied to procurement of regulated codeine syrup, with links being examined to supplier Roshan Lal.
  • The CBN dismissed Mahipal Singh, suspended Ravi Ranjan and Adarsh Yogi, and opened an internal inquiry as the CBI tracks additional suspects, including Ahmad’s son Kakub.
