CBI Secures Custody of Suspended Punjab DIG Bhullar as Vigilance Bureau’s Bid Fails

The remand enables face-to-face questioning with the alleged middleman in an inquiry now widened to disproportionate assets.

Overview

  • A CBI court in Chandigarh granted the agency custody of Harcharan Singh Bhullar to confront him with alleged middleman Krishanu Sharda and probe chats, money trail and hidden electronic devices.
  • The Punjab Vigilance Bureau registered its own disproportionate-assets case and sought Bhullar’s custody, but a Mohali court did not grant it, with further hearing listed for November 3.
  • Bhullar’s judicial custody had been extended to November 14 on October 31 before the CBI sought remand, shifting the case back into active interrogation.
  • Searches linked to Bhullar yielded over ₹7.36 crore in cash, jewellery worth more than ₹2.32 crore, 26 luxury watches and documents referencing nearly 50 properties despite an income-tax return of about ₹45.95 lakh.
  • The CBI told the court that data and a diary recovered from Sharda indicate financial dealings with public servants, a claim his counsel disputes as unsupported by mere phone contacts.
