CBI Nabs ITAT Jaipur Accountant Member as Cash Seizures Rise in Bribery Probe

Investigators say hawala-funded payoffs were used to fix outcomes of tax appeals at the tribunal.

Overview

  • PTI reports that accountant member Kamlesh Rathod was arrested, remanded to police custody until December 1, and Rs 20 lakh was seized from his Jaipur residence.
  • Earlier this week, the CBI arrested advocate Rajendra Sisodia with an alleged Rs 5.5 lakh hawala bribe, Judicial Member Dr. S. Seethalakshmi with Rs 30 lakh recovered from her official car, and appellant Mujmmel.
  • The agency says total cash recovery in the case now stands at over Rs 1.30 crore, alongside transaction records and property papers indicating an organised syndicate.
  • Multiple raids have been conducted in Jaipur, Kota and other locations, and the CBI says searches and financial-trail analysis are continuing to identify further links.
  • Free Press Journal reports that investigators allege draft tribunal orders were shared in advance and finalised after payment, while a court has remanded the earlier arrestees until November 29.
