CBI-Led Probe Finds 42% of TTD Ghee Adulterated, Estimates 20 Crore Laddus Affected

Officials say mixed ghee stocks in the temple kitchen make it impossible to identify which devotees received tainted prasadam.

Overview

  • Between 2019 and 2024, TTD procured 1.61 crore kg of ghee, of which the SIT says 68 lakh kg was spurious and valued at nearly ₹250 crore.
  • Investigators traced the adulterated supply to Bhole Baba Dairy and associated firms including AR Dairy, Vyshnavi Dairy and Mal Ganga Dairy.
  • Lab tests found palm oil and palm kernel oil, colorants, flavoring and emulsifiers were used to mimic dairy ghee.
  • TTD records show 48.76 crore laddus were made for 10.97 crore devotees in that period, and proportional calculations indicate roughly two in five may have used adulterated ghee.
  • The SIT has questioned former chairman Y.V. Subba Reddy, arrested ex-aide Chinna Appanna, submitted findings to a Nellore court and plans a supplementary chargesheet by December 15.
