CBI Court Jails Ex-Jharkhand Minister Anosh Ekka for 7 Years in Tribal Land Case

The punishment follows a CBI case over illegal purchases of protected tribal land in 2006–08.

Overview

  • Special Judge Shyam Nandan Tiwari sentenced Anosh Ekka and his wife Menon Ekka to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, with fines and an additional one-year term on default.
  • Four other convicts, including then Ranchi LRDC Kartik Kumar Prabhat, received five-year prison terms, as the court concluded sentencing in the case in Ranchi.
  • In total, 10 people were convicted for violations of the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act related to forged addresses and illegal transfers of tribal land, while one accused was acquitted for lack of evidence.
  • CBI findings said Ekka used over ₹1.18 crore to buy multiple plots in Ranchi district in his wife’s name from 2006 to 2008, including parcels in Hinoo, Ormanjhi, Nevri and Chutia’s Sirm Toli Mouza.
  • The investigation began after Jharkhand High Court–directed PILs, with the CBI registering the case in August 2010, filing a chargesheet in December 2012 and securing convictions in August 2025.
