CBI Court Convicts Former Jharkhand Minister Anosh Ekka, Wife and Officials in Tribal Land Scam

Sentencing is set for Saturday after the Ranchi court accepted CBI evidence of illegal tribal-land transfers under the CNT Act.

Overview

  • Ten people were found guilty, including Anosh Ekka, his wife Menon Ekka and then Ranchi LRDC Kartik Kumar Prabhat, and were taken into judicial custody.
  • The court scheduled the hearing on the quantum of sentence for August 30 in Ranchi.
  • Investigators said land was bought between March 2006 and May 2008 in Menon Ekka’s name using fake addresses and benami arrangements.
  • Parcels cited by the CBI include plots in Hinoo (22 katha), Ormanjhi (12 acres), Nevri/Newri (4 acres) and Chutia’s Sirm Toli Mouza (9 decimals).
  • One accused, Govardhan Baitha, was acquitted for lack of evidence as the case, registered by the CBI in 2010 and charge-sheeted in 2012, culminated after a roughly 15-year process.
