CBI Court Convicts 10 in Jharkhand Tribal Land Case, Including Ex-Minister Anosh Ekka

The verdict stems from a High Court–mandated CBI probe into forged-address deals that bypassed legal safeguards for Scheduled Tribe land.

Overview

  • Anosh Ekka, his wife Menon Ekka and eight others were found guilty by a special CBI court in Ranchi of violating the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act.
  • All convicts were sent to judicial custody, and the court scheduled arguments on the quantum of sentence for August 30.
  • CBI said Ekka purchased land in Ranchi between 2006 and 2008 in his wife's name for about ₹1.18 crore, including parcels in Hinoo, Ormanjhi, Nevri and Siram Toli.
  • Investigators alleged the use of forged addresses and collusion by the Land Reforms Deputy Collector, staff and circle officers to secure favorable transfer recommendations.
  • The case followed PILs that led the Jharkhand High Court to order a CBI probe; the agency registered the case in 2010 and filed a charge-sheet in 2012, and one report notes an accused was acquitted for lack of evidence.
