CBI Convicts Bihar Postal Accountant, Arrests Jharkhand Sub-Post Master for Rs 20,000 Bribe
The verdict comes as the CBI intensifies a nationwide crackdown on corruption in postal services.
Overview
- A Special CBI Court in Patna sentenced Lohra Bhagat to two years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a Rs 1.10 lakh fine for drawing salaries from two government departments over a three-year period.
- Investigators found Bhagat used forged documents to assume the name Lalit Bhagat and serve simultaneously as a senior accountant for India Post and deputy chairman of the Bihar State Scheduled Tribe Commission from July 2010 to July 2013.
- Prosecutors determined that Bhagat unlawfully collected Rs 3.41 lakh from the postal department and Rs 14.87 lakh plus benefits from the Bihar government.
- On July 22 the CBI also arrested a sub-post master in Manoharpur, West Singhbhum, for accepting a first installment of Rs 20,000 toward a demanded Rs 1.18 lakh bribe from a small-savings commission agent.
- Both actions reflect a broader CBI initiative launched in late 2024 to root out graft in India Post through sting operations, special courts and expedited prosecutions.
