A court remanded Rajendra Rawat to CBI custody until October 1 for a probe into payoffs to fast-track PESO approvals.

Overview

  • The CBI says a tip-off led to a trap in which Rahul Bachate was stopped after a delivery at Rawat’s home and admitted handing Rs 9 lakh to the officer’s wife.
  • Searches at the residence recovered the alleged bribe plus Rs 7.5 lakh in unexplained cash, according to the agency.
  • At the PESO office, an agent was found with Rs 8 lakh in a vehicle, and an architect acknowledged bringing Rs 1.5 lakh for another public servant.
  • In total, investigators seized about Rs 26 lakh along with chat records and lists of PESO applications described as incriminating.
  • Rawat and a private individual were produced before the Special CBI Court in Thane, which granted five days of police custody as scrutiny widens to other officials.
