CBI Arrests Odisha EPFO Official Over Rs 10,000 Bribe
The CBI is expanding its probe to determine if Rath solicited the payment alone or with other EPFO employees.
Overview
- On June 14 the CBI arrested Anil Rath, senior social security assistant at the EPFO regional office in Berhampur, for allegedly demanding a Rs 10,000 bribe to approve two authorised signatory applications.
- Chartered accountant Suraj Kumar Dash filed a complaint on June 12 after Rath repeatedly rejected applications between March and May, citing incomplete documentation.
- CBI agents verified the complaint on-site and registered a case under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
- Investigators noted Rath’s references to an unidentified “Sir” during the probe and are now examining whether additional EPFO officials were complicit.
- The arrest has highlighted concerns over corruption within the Employees Provident Fund Organisation and its potential impact on the agency’s integrity and public trust.
