CBI Arrests Chandigarh Advocate and Aide in Rs30 Lakh Divorce Bribe Sting

Overview

  • A written complaint by Firozepur resident Harsimranjit Singh alleges advocate Jatin Salwan sought Rs30 lakh to sway a Bathinda divorce verdict by leveraging a judicial officer.
  • CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch registered an FIR on August 14 under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and Section 7-A of the Prevention of Corruption Act after a two-day preliminary verification approved by IPS officer Navdeep Singh Brar.
  • Recorded phone intercepts captured Salwan insisting that bribe amounts are never reduced, and his aide Satnam Singh was later detained in Sector 9, Chandigarh, while accepting a Rs4 lakh token installment.
  • Both Salwan and Singh were produced before the Chandigarh CBI court and remanded to judicial custody, with the advocate’s counsel declining to comment on the allegations.
  • The CBI continues to probe potential involvement of unnamed public servants and is gathering further evidence through interrogations and document reviews.
