Overview
- The CBFC told a bench of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Neela Gokhale that it will rule on the certification applications for Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi within two working days and inform the producers immediately.
- In response to this assurance, the Bombay High Court disposed of Samrat Cinematics’ writ petition that had challenged the board’s alleged failure to process screening requests for the film, its teaser, trailer and promotional song.
- Producers had argued that the CBFC breached statutory deadlines under the Cinematograph Act, 1952 and the Certification Rules, 2024, which require examination within seven days and screening placement within 15 days.
- The petition also contended that the board wrongly demanded a No Objection Certificate from the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office despite there being no such legal requirement.
- Legal observers warn that the case could set a precedent limiting the CBFC’s discretionary powers and safeguarding producers’ rights against administrative delays ahead of the August 1 release.
