CBF Will Use Semi-Automatic Offside System in Brasileirão From July 25

Overview

• The CBF, which announced the move on Tuesday, will activate the semi-automatic offside system in the 20th round beginning July 25 so the tool is available for all second-turn Brasileirão matches.
• The system uses 28 to 32 high-frame-rate cameras and vision-computation at about 100 frames per second to track players and the ball, determine the moment of contact and produce a 3D offside animation that VAR officials must review before any decision is communicated.
• If the technology fails before or during a match, referees will revert to manual VAR line tracing and stadium staff and broadcasters will be notified so teams, coaches, fans and viewers know the system is unavailable.
• The CBF funded installations at 19 stadiums while Palmeiras paid for the Arena Barueri set-up at about $100,000, and the setup required technical visits, calibration and testing carried out since January.
• The CBF plans to introduce additional FIFA World Cup rule changes from round 23 pending a clubs' meeting on August 10 and will use the offside system in Copa Libertadores from the round of 16 with some World Cup rule elements excluded.
