CBF Has Not Set Venue for Vasco–Flamengo Classic Days Before Match

The federation must choose between Vasco’s request to move the Oct. 29 game to Nilton Santos to protect the Maracanã pitch and the state police’s security preference for the Maracanã.

Overview

  • Vasco formally asked the CBF on Oct. 21 to stage the Oct. 29 match at Estádio Nilton Santos after São Januário was ruled unsuitable for security reasons and the Rio federation gave its approval.
  • As of Oct. 24 the CBF had not published an official venue, leaving operational plans and policing arrangements unresolved five days before the game.
  • Rio state police secretary Coronel Sylvio Guerra personally raised security concerns with CBF and indicated a preference for operating the match at the Maracanã.
  • The Batalhão Especial de Policiamento em Estádios and the Ministério Público did not publicly oppose Nilton Santos, and Flamengo has contacted security authorities while waiting for CBF’s formal decision.
  • The dispute reflects wider tensions over Maracanã scheduling and turf recovery under the consortium that runs the stadium and means the CBF choice will determine ticketing, police deployment, and which club or agency must adapt logistics.
