CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline to September 15 for Non-Audit Taxpayers

A comprehensive overhaul of return forms followed by the rollout of e-filing tools for the first four ITR categories underpins the revised deadline

Overview

  • Non-audit taxpayers including salaried employees, pensioners and NRIs now have until September 15, 2025 to file returns and pay any self-assessment tax without incurring Section 234A interest
  • Late filers will face 1% monthly interest under Section 234A and late-filing fees of ₹1,000 for incomes below ₹5 lakh or ₹5,000 for incomes above ₹5 lakh under Section 234F
  • E-filing utilities for ITR-1 through ITR-4 are fully operational after delays caused by extensive form revisions
  • Over one crore income tax returns have already been filed in the ongoing FY2024-25 season
  • Original due dates apply for audit-mandated returns (October 31), transfer-pricing reports (November 30) and belated or revised filings (December 31)
