Overview
- The Scan Pyramids project detected two small air-filled voids behind a polished stone zone on the eastern facade of the Menkaure pyramid using ERT, ground‑penetrating radar and ultrasonic methods.
- Survey data place the anomalies roughly 1.4 meters and 1.13 meters behind the face, with reported dimensions near 1.0 by 1.5 meters and 0.9 by 0.7 meters, respectively.
- The polished area spans about four meters high by six meters wide, a finish otherwise seen around the known northern entrance, which led researchers to propose a potential secondary entry.
- An east-side entrance would be unusual for Old Kingdom pyramids, and outside experts, including Harvard Egyptologist Peter Der Manuelian, urged caution in interpreting the results.
- The team’s analysis has been described in new reporting, including a paper cited in NDT & E International, and further non-invasive tests are planned to clarify the nature and extent of the cavities.
