CATL Unveils TECTRANS II Modular Battery Platform for Heavy Trucks

Designed to cut fleet costs with up to 1,000 km range, megawatt charging and swap-ready modules, the launch leaves pack capacity and cell chemistry undisclosed.

Overview

  • CATL introduced TECTRANS II at IAA Transportation in Hannover as a modular commercial-vehicle battery family that can be configured for heavy trucks, medium-duty vehicles and buses.
  • The company says the heavy-duty configuration delivers up to 1,000 km of range, reaches 80% state of charge in 25 minutes on megawatt chargers, and is engineered for a 12-year, 1.5-million-kilometre service life.
  • TECTRANS II standardizes external dimensions, electrical interfaces and communication protocols so packs can support both megawatt charging and battery swapping across different vehicle architectures.
  • CATL signed an MoU with DHL to pilot Green Freight Corridors in Europe and reported plans to expand swap and charge stations, but it has not disclosed the pack capacity or the underlying cell chemistry that would verify the range and performance claims.
  • The launch arrives as OEMs and rivals show high-range electric trucks at IAA and as Europe tightens heavy-duty CO₂ rules, creating demand for scalable charging and swapping infrastructure and raising questions about charger standards and real-world fleet economics.
