Catherine Connolly To Be Sworn In as Ireland’s 10th President Today

A presidential commission is overseeing duties pending her formal oath at Dublin Castle.

Overview

  • The inauguration will take place in St Patrick’s Hall late this morning, where Chief Justice Donal O’Donnell will read the constitutional declaration that Connolly has chosen to deliver in Irish before signing and receiving the Seal of Office.
  • Ceremonial honours will include a 21‑gun salute from Collins Barracks, a Defence Forces guard of honour and an Air Corps flypast, followed by her first journey to Áras an Uachtaráin and an evening state reception.
  • Michael D Higgins left Áras an Uachtaráin at the end of his term, with interim presidential functions passing to a commission comprising Donal O’Donnell, Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy and Seanad Cathaoirleach Mark Daly.
  • Higgins’ portrait has been removed from Leinster House and relocated to Áras an Uachtaráin, and he will continue to receive Garda protection and supports after leaving office.
  • Connolly, an independent TD from Galway elected on 25 October with 63% of first‑preference votes, has pledged an inclusive presidency focused on peace, neutrality and climate, and is expected to outline her themes in a short address.
