Category 4 Hurricane Norma Approaches Baja California Sur

Expected to Weaken Over Weekend, Hurricane Norma Predicted to Unleash 5 to 15 Inch Rainfall, Heavy Winds, and Potential Floods in Southern Baja California Sur; Local Government Prepares Shelters and Supplies

  • Category 4 Hurricane Norma is expected to weaken over the weekend but still poses a significant threat to Baja California Sur, Mexico, with potential floods, heavy winds, and torrential rainfall of 5 to 15 inches.
  • As of October 19, 2023, Hurricane Norma exhibits wind speeds of up to 130 miles per hour and is on track to brush past Cabo San Lucas, a tourist hotspot in Baja California Sur.
  • Alongside Hurricane Norma, Hurricane Watches have been instigated for Todos Santos and Los Barriles. The Mexican government has also issued a tropical storm watch for Islas Marías, an archipelago off the western coast of Mexico.
  • Local government has initiated preparations for the storm which includes the arrangement of shelters, food, and supplies especially for people in low-lying coastal areas.
  • Norma is the 14th named storm to form in the eastern Pacific in 2023.
  • Reports suggest that Hurricane Norma might concurrently impact Baja California Sur with another disturbance in the Pacific; however, Norma is expected to follow a more northward track later in the week.
