Category 4 Gabrielle Nears Azores Hurricane Watch as Two Atlantic Disturbances Gather Strength

Forecasters say the central Atlantic disturbance could become a depression by Thursday or Friday.

Overview

  • Hurricane Gabrielle remains a major Category 4 with 140 mph winds, moving northeast and forecast to gradually weaken as it tracks toward the Azores.
  • A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the Azores, with the center of Gabrielle expected to approach Thursday and cross the islands overnight into Friday.
  • Large swells from Gabrielle are producing dangerous surf and rip currents affecting Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast from the Carolinas northward, and Atlantic Canada.
  • A system about 1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles (AL93) shows increasing organization with formation odds raised to about 60% in 48 hours and 90% over seven days, and a depression is likely late week as it moves WNW to NW.
  • A second wave near the Leeward Islands (AL94) carries about a 20%/60% formation chance over 48 hours/seven days, will bring rain and gusty winds to the Leewards, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and could slow and turn near the Bahamas later this week with U.S. impacts still uncertain; the next storm name would be Humberto.
