Catamarca's El Rodeo Named 2026 World Alfajor Champion

Judges evaluated entries blind on 35 sensory criteria, and the fruit-based higo, nuez and coco alfajor now raises the profile of regional artisanal producers.

Overview

  • El Rodeo was declared the overall champion at the fifth Campeonato/Mundial del Alfajor held at BA Ferial in Buenos Aires following the weekend of August 15–17, 2026.
  • The winning alfajor features vanilla cookies, a dulce de higo filling with coconut flakes and walnut pieces, a light touch of dulce de leche, and a thin glacé coating, and it also won the gold in the 'Fruit' filling category.
  • A blind panel of about 25 experts judged several hundred samples from more than a dozen countries using 35 sensory attributes to pick category winners and the overall champion.
  • El Rodeo is a family firm from San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca founded in 1979 and reactivated in April 2023; the brand had previously won multiple medals at earlier editions of the tournament.
  • The contest also highlighted other provincial producers, notably Mendoza’s Entre Dos which took four distinctions, and the victory has prompted official congratulations and plans by El Rodeo’s owner to explore a Buenos Aires outlet to meet rising demand.
