Catalonia Unveils Official Viewing Map and Crowd Plan for the 2026 Total Solar Eclipse

The plan designates 20 host municipalities with managed access to absorb large eclipse turnout.

Overview

  • The Generalitat released a guide naming 20 municipalities and 27 observation points for the 12 August 2026 eclipse, with operations coordinated by Protecció Civil and other agencies.
  • Capacity is estimated at roughly 85,000 people and 40,000 vehicles, and authorities reserve the option to close access if sites are overwhelmed.
  • Priority viewing areas lie in Camp de Tarragona, Terres de l'Ebre and parts of Lleida, while Barcelona will see over 99% coverage without totality.
  • Site selection criteria include municipalities of at least 3,000 inhabitants, horizon visibility over 60% and a minimum observable totality of about 52 seconds, with peak around 20:30.
  • Officials are preparing mobility controls and fire-risk measures, warn of likely AP7 congestion, and are evaluating protective-glasses procurement alongside public eye-safety campaigns.
