Catalonia Designates 20 Priority Towns for August Total Solar Eclipse

The government has launched detailed crowd, traffic and safety planning to prepare for the August 12 event.

Overview

  • The Generalitat has identified 20 municipalities inside the path of totality as official 'tribuna' viewing sites with a combined capacity of more than 50,000 places.
  • An interdepartmental commission is finalising practical measures for access, parking and vehicle circulation to manage large crowds and to protect natural and fire‑risk areas.
  • The regional outreach programme Eclipsadas trained 25 women scientists to run classroom talks that reached about 2,700 students across 44 schools and will be expanded with public activities and an online MOOC.
  • Astronomers and the European Space Agency stress that the eclipse is precisely predictable, will occur close to sunset in Catalonia (around 8:30 p.m.), and that observers must use certified eclipse glasses or indirect viewing methods to avoid permanent eye damage.
  • The event offers scientific and cultural opportunities while creating transport and safety challenges for local communities, so authorities are finalising site operations and public information to keep viewing safe and accessible.
