Catalonia Boosts Controlled Dam Releases Ahead of Forecast Heavy Rains

Reservoirs sit at 86% capacity, keeping Catalonia out of drought.

Overview

  • The Agència Catalana de l'Aigua will increase outflows at key reservoirs to create buffer capacity before the expected rainfall.
  • Internal basins stand at 86.03% as of January 15, with the Sau–Susqueda subsystem near 90% capacity.
  • Planned changes include raising Sau–Susqueda releases from 3 to 15 m3/s, Foix from 85 to 300 l/s, and adding roughly 2 m3/s at Darnius–Boadella.
  • Most other reservoirs will keep usual discharge levels to safeguard water supply and ecological flows in the Ter–Llobregat system that serves Barcelona and Girona.
  • Authorities will continuously monitor rivers and reservoirs during the rain episode and may adjust measures, noting possible rises on rivers such as the Ter, Llobregat and Muga.
