Overview
- On June 16, Generalitat de Cataluña and the Ayuntamiento de L'Hospitalet formalized an agreement that unlocks the soterramiento through a €39.8 million advance from the regional government.
- The plan calls for undergrounding 450 meters of Gran Via in a first three-year tunneling phase beginning in late 2026, with full completion scheduled by 2030.
- First-phase works are estimated at €144.6 million, with the Generalitat covering roughly 19.7% and the municipality contributing over 27.6% based on land-ownership shares.
- The initiative is forecast to generate 50,000 jobs and add €4.5 billion annually to Catalonia’s GDP by forming a biomedical hub around Bellvitge Hospital and the University of Barcelona.
- The deal also transfers municipal parcels for public facilities, designates L'Hospitalet a single health area to end patient travel, and increases Mossos d’Esquadra public order units in the city.
