Overview
- Multiple outlets reported on Saturday that JDC Propiedades has relisted the Castillo Mandl in La Cumbre with an asking price of US$3.1 million.
- The property covers almost ten hectares, includes about 2,250 square meters of built area and 16 bedrooms spread across three floors, plus guest houses, stables, a pool and farmland.
- The house was remodeled in the 1940s by Fritz Mandl, an Austrian arms industrialist once married to Hedy Lamarr, who transformed the original 1920s fortress into a European-style chalet with high-end furnishings.
- Decades later one of Mandl’s heirs granted use of the estate to Argentina’s intelligence service under Hugo Anzorreguy and the site hosted presidents including Carlos Menem and Fernando de la Rúa.
- The castle suffered a major art theft in April 1990 when 42 colonial works were taken and Interpol recovered 13 of those paintings in Spain in 2003, a history that shapes conservation and legal questions for any buyer or developer.
