Castilla y León Opens Judicial Year as TSJ Chief Calls for 30 More Judges

The regional prosecutor urged recognition of the Ministerio Fiscal as part of the Judicial Power during a ceremony attended by senior political and judicial leaders.

Overview

  • Ana del Ser pledged a judiciary that acts with rectitude, honesty and a vocation of service, stressing that judges must resolve conflicts rather than fuel them at the Burgos opening of the 2025–2026 term.
  • Del Ser estimated the region needs at least 30 additional judges across first instance, provincial and criminal courts and said a needs assessment will be sent to the Ministry of Justice.
  • Fiscal superior Santiago Mena asserted that the Ministerio Fiscal belongs to the Judicial Power and grounded his appeal in the Constitution’s Title VI.
  • Regional president Alfonso Fernández Mañueco called for stronger public backing of Justice and the institutions that safeguard freedom and democracy, as CGPJ representatives and security forces joined the event.
  • Leaders highlighted ongoing reforms such as tribunales de instancia, the push for greater specialization in gender-violence cases, and operational pressures including a 5.3% rise to 103,000 criminal matters and a 17% increase in violence-against-women cases.
