Castilla y León Leads Spain in Elder Care Home Capacity, Driven by Public Funding

The latest sector report highlights a decade-long shift to public financing behind the region’s lead.

Overview

  • Castilla y León has 49,430 residential places for people 65 and over, including 39,507 publicly funded and 9,923 private, placing it at the top nationally.
  • The region provides about 6.04 publicly financed places and 1.52 private places per 100 older residents, reflecting a sustained emphasis on public funding.
  • Public financing has expanded from 2.47 per 100 in 2010 to 6.04 in 2024, while privately funded capacity declined from 4.85 to 1.52 over the same period.
  • Castilla y León exceeds the sector’s benchmark of five places per 100 by 16,712 places, with it and Castilla-La Mancha standing out for surpassing the benchmark primarily through public funding.
  • Nationally, Spain counted 412,109 places at the start of 2025 with 339,655 residents and about 82.4% occupancy, yet post‑pandemic growth added only 23,075 places versus an increase of more than 800,000 people aged 65+, prompting calls for over 50,000 additional places for severe and great dependency and nearly 100,000 to reach the benchmark.
