Castaic Gas Main Rupture Triggers Shelter-in-Place, Temporarily Shuts I-5

No injuries were reported, with a probe underway into a possible mudslide link.

Overview

  • Officials received reports around 4:20 p.m. of a rupture on a 34- to 36-inch transmission line near Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place just east of southbound I-5.
  • SoCal Gas shut off the line by about 6 p.m. and mitigated the leak, though authorities cautioned that some residual gas could continue to seep.
  • A shelter-in-place order remained in effect Saturday night for roughly 14,900 people with guidance to stay indoors, close doors and vents, and turn off HVAC systems.
  • CHP closed both directions of I-5 and diverted traffic to SR-126 and SR-138; all lanes reopened after several hours.
  • Hazmat teams and arson and explosives detectives responded as the cause is investigated, Gov. Gavin Newsom was briefed with Cal OES assisting, and residents reported gas odors miles away.
