Thompson, 25, made the announcement on social media on Thursday night.
Thompson's career has been marked by injuries, including a torn ACL during his time at FAU.
Despite his injury-riddled career, Thompson has recorded 5,338 passing yards, 52 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
He is expected to back up Jackson Arnold as the Sooners join the Southeastern Conference next season.
