Casaio Fire in Galicia Tops 500 Hectares as Castromil Blaze Drops to Level 1

Wind-driven flare-ups are stretching firefighting operations across Galicia and Castilla y León.

Overview

  • After reactivation Saturday and a rapid escalation to IGR 2, the Castromil fire in Zamora was reduced to IGR 1 overnight and the village confinement was lifted, with roughly two aircraft and more than 20 ground resources working on Sunday morning.
  • In Ourense, the wildfire in Casaio (Carballeda de Valdeorras) remained active with provisional estimates above 500 hectares, as strong gusts complicated containment and a large deployment of brigades, bulldozers, helicopters and planes continued.
  • Operational updates cited sustained winds near 20 km/h with gusts above 40 km/h that fanned flames and constrained suppression efforts across several fronts.
  • Galicia authorities began emergency wildlife support, distributing 34,000 kilos of hay and cereals, including about 24,000 kilos delivered by helicopter to hard-to-reach refuges.
  • Investigations into the latest ignitions are ongoing, with officials noting some recent fires in the region were set intentionally while other causes are still being probed.
