Casa Roja, Frida Kahlo’s Family Museum, Opens to the Public in Coyoacán

The parents’ house becomes an intimate gallery that foregrounds family materials to reframe Kahlo beyond the icon.

Overview

  • Public opening runs Sept. 26–27, with regular hours Wednesday to Monday from 10:00 to 19:00, projected daily capacity of about 530–550 visitors, tickets available online or at the box office, and prices of 130 pesos for Mexican visitors and 65 pesos for students, children and seniors.
  • Located at Aguayo 54 in Coyoacán just meters from Casa Azul, the museum is intended to ease demand at the better-known house museum.
  • Exhibitions focus on family life through letters, photographs and objects, and feature nine works by Frida Kahlo plus a restored kitchen fresco inscribed “el mesón de los gorriones.”
  • The presentation spotlights Guillermo Kahlo’s photographic legacy and Frida’s early development, including materials connected to her teaching and her sister Cristina.
  • The newly formed Fundación Kahlo in New York supports programming such as a planned Premio Arte Kahlo and helped connect the project with designer David Rockwell.
