CAS Reinstates Russia for IIHF Events

Host bodies, national teams, sponsors, and governments are preparing boycotts, visa restrictions and withdrawals that could derail the 2027 World Championship.

Overview

  • Last week the International Sport Court (CAS) overturned the IIHF ban and legally cleared Russian teams to return to IIHF world championships.
  • Within days several leading national federations, including Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Latvia and voices in the Czech Republic, announced they will not play Russia, citing security and political concerns.
  • The IIHF has paused implementation and is continuing meetings to work out practical steps for tournaments while the German host federation (DEB) is assessing whether to hand back the 2027 men’s World Championship.
  • Governments and sponsors have reacted sharply: Canada has said it will not admit Russia to the U20 tournament by refusing visas, a major Swedish sponsor has pulled support and other partners such as Škoda are reviewing their involvement.
  • The dispute pits sport law against state policy and raises immediate logistical problems—visa rules, venue security, tournament formats and possible displacement of teams such as Ukraine—that threaten the calendar and finances of upcoming IIHF events.
