Overview

  • The Court of Arbitration for Sport granted the Athletics Integrity Unit’s request to provisionally suspend Diribe Welteji.
  • The ruling makes the 23-year-old ineligible a day before her scheduled 1,500-meter heat at the Tokyo championships.
  • CAS said Welteji was accused of refusing to provide a doping sample without justification in May.
  • Ethiopia’s anti-doping authority had cleared her in late August, prompting the AIU to appeal to CAS on Thursday.
  • Welteji, the 2023 world silver medalist and No. 2 in the 1,500-meter world rankings, was considered a medal contender.
