Cars Reach Kashmir by Rail for the First Time as Maruti Suzuki Rake Arrives in Anantnag

The unloading at Anantnag opens direct automobile logistics to the Valley via the USBRL, promising lower costs with quicker deliveries.

Overview

  • Northern Railway completed the first auto-rake delivery to the Kashmir Valley, unloading 116 Maruti Suzuki vehicles at the Anantnag Goods Shed.
  • The train left Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar in-plant Gati Shakti Terminal on October 1 and traveled about 850 km in roughly 45 hours, reaching on Friday morning.
  • Maruti Suzuki became the first automaker in India to deliver cars to the Valley by rail, using a rake of 25 New Modified Goods wagons for the shipment.
  • The route ran over the UdhampurSrinagarBaramulla link, including a crossing of the Chenab River’s record-high arch bridge commissioned earlier this year.
  • Rail officials and local dealers say direct rail delivery will cut transport costs, speed distribution, and ease highway traffic, extending freight gains after recent cement and apple runs.
