Overview

  • An MRI and biopsy in June 2024 confirmed stage three bowel cancer linked to Spary’s pre-existing Crohn’s disease after months of pain.
  • He underwent a stoma fitting in July 2024 followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy when initial treatment failed to fully shrink the tumour.
  • On May 21, surgeons removed the remaining cancerous section of his colon and a plastic surgery team reconstructed his pelvic floor using nearby tissue.
  • Spary is due to leave hospital by the end of May and will work with physiotherapists to relearn to walk before resuming running.
  • He aims to compete in the 2026 London Marathon to raise funds for Trekstok, a charity supporting young people with cancer.
