Overview
- Prime Minister Mark Carney formally set the byelection date on Sunday, July 26, 2026, scheduling votes for Aug. 31, 2026 in three federal ridings.
- The contests are in North Vancouver–Capilano, Beaches–East York and Chicoutimi—Le Fjord, seats vacated by Jonathan Wilkinson, Nate Erskine‑Smith and Richard Martel respectively for a diplomatic posting, resignation and a Senate appointment.
- The Liberal Party has already named candidates in all three ridings — Braeden Caley in North Vancouver–Capilano, Tanveer Shahnawaz in Beaches–East York and Daniel Gobeil in Chicoutimi—Le Fjord.
- Opposition parties have not finalized all challengers; the NDP says it has given nomination packages to interested candidates and expects to announce names soon.
- The results carry outsized parliamentary importance because the Liberals hold a narrow margin of seats and are expected to lose one by late September, so winning at least one byelection would help the government preserve working control of the House where the Speaker can break ties.
