Carlos Soria, 86, Summits Manaslu, Sets Oldest 8,000‑Metre Record

The ascent coincides with the 50th anniversary of Spain’s 1975 Manaslu expedition, in which he took part.

Overview

  • Seven Summit Treks director Mingma Sherpa confirmed Soria reached the 8,163‑metre summit at 5:30 a.m. local time and was descending safely.
  • The feat surpasses the age mark set by Japan’s Yuichiro Miura, who summited Everest in 2013 at 80.
  • The Manaslu summit is Soria’s 12th eight‑thousander, leaving Dhaulagiri and Shishapangma to complete the 14.
  • The team planned to descend to Camp II on Friday and return to base camp the following day after the summit.
  • Soria climbed with sherpas Mikel, Nima and Phurba, with filmmaker Luis Miguel López Soriano documenting the expedition.
