Overview

  • Responders found the infant unresponsive in a car seat around 4:40 p.m. in the Rockwall-Heath High School staff lot, and medics recorded a body temperature of 107 degrees before pronouncing her dead at the scene.
  • Police allege Camerone Tyrone Leichman, 36, had recently assumed caregiving duties and failed to drop the baby at daycare after taking his common-law wife to work.
  • Investigators believe the child remained in the vehicle for several hours while it was parked at the couple’s Sunfish Road home before Leichman returned to the school to pick up his partner.
  • An arrest warrant was issued during the investigation, and officers took Leichman into custody shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of injury to a child, a second-degree felony.
  • Rockwall police say the case remains open, bond has not been set, and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has launched a parallel review.
