Overview

  • Cardi B used a live X Spaces chat to call out the relentless negativity focused on Tyla and to defend her against “straight up disrespectful” comments.
  • The rapper described scrolling through “thousands of videos” criticizing Tyla and asked rhetorically, “what do you want her to f—ing do, cut her f—ing veins?” to underscore the abuse’s severity.
  • Much of the backlash stems from a resurfaced 2020 TikTok in which Tyla referred to herself as a “Coloured South African” and from her choice not to address ethnicity questions on The Breakfast Club.
  • Tyla later clarified online that she is both Coloured in South Africa and a Black woman and described the identity dispute as “really confusing” in a Variety interview.
  • Despite the controversy, Tyla released her four-track EP WWP last month and has a full album due later this year, while Cardi B is gearing up to drop a new single ahead of her September album.
