Carbon Monoxide Leak at Chubut Chapel Sickens Worshippers

Preliminary examinations point to a detached boiler exhaust pipe as the cause with services halted until safety checks are completed.

Overview

  • Emergency crews from volunteer firefighters, Defensa Civil, local police and ambulance teams evacuated and ventilated the Nuestra Señora de Lourdes chapel after congregants fell ill during Sunday mass.
  • Several worshippers—including a child, an altar boy and parish priest Fernando Franco—experienced symptoms of carbon monoxide intoxication and were treated on site or transported for further care.
  • Public ambulances from service 107 and private units from Delta attended to the affected individuals while some parishioners were taken to hospitals in private vehicles.
  • Initial technical findings indicate that a boiler’s carbon monoxide discharge pipe became detached or obstructed, allowing the gas to accumulate inside the chapel.
  • Authorities have declared the situation under control and will keep the chapel closed pending a comprehensive safety inspection before resuming services.
