Car Raised From Rhine After Ferry-Landing Plunge That Killed Driver

Police treat the case as an accident pending identification of the driver.

Overview

  • Witnesses at a nearby Nikolaus celebration reported a car rolling over the Neuburgweier ferry landing into the Rhine at about 22:25 on Saturday.
  • More than 100 personnel from the fire brigade, DLRG, DRK and water police searched through the night as strong currents hampered access to the vehicle.
  • DLRG divers located the sunken Mazda on the riverbed overnight but conditions prevented a safe recovery before daylight.
  • Around 14:30 on Sunday, crews used sonar, a recovery ship, a crane and a dredger to lift the car and bring it ashore.
  • The apparently lone occupant was recovered deceased, and investigators note the vehicle had drawn attention earlier for its driving.
