Car Pulled From Seekonk River, Occupants Believed Inside

Strong currents and poor underwater visibility are delaying confirmation of who was in the vehicle.

Overview

  • A car carrying a family of three entered the Seekonk River near the Taft Street boat ramp shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Pawtucket police said.
  • A bystander on a jet ski tried to help and another witness called 911, and first responders arrived at the scene within about three minutes of the emergency call.
  • Recovery operations resumed the next day and the vehicle was pulled from the river Monday afternoon, with authorities saying the three occupants are believed to remain inside.
  • Dive teams from Pawtucket and Rhode Island state agencies are continuing follow-up searches but say strong current and low visibility make underwater work extremely challenging.
  • Officials have not released the occupants' identities or conditions and have asked for privacy and community support as recovery and investigation efforts continue.
