Overview
- Witnesses at about 22:25 on Saturday reported a car rolling over the Neuburgweier ferry landing into the Rhine near Rheinstetten.
- More than 100 personnel from fire brigade, DLRG, DRK and water police searched overnight as strong currents prevented an immediate rescue.
- Divers located the sunken vehicle during the night, and on Sunday afternoon crews used sonar, a recovery ship and a crane to lift it from the river.
- The body of the lone occupant was found in the driver’s seat when the car was recovered, and no evidence of additional passengers was reported.
- Authorities say the deceased was an 82-year-old previously reported missing in Bad Bergzabern, and they are proceeding on the assumption of an accident.
