CAQM Names Key Delhi-NCR Pollution Sources, Commissions High-Resolution Inventory

The initiative follows Supreme Court pressure to strengthen forecasting tools to enable more targeted controls.

Overview

  • CAQM submitted its report to the Supreme Court on January 20, consolidating earlier studies and placing the findings in the public domain.
  • Winter contributions cited from past studies: secondary particulate matter at 27%, transport at 23%, biomass burning at 20%, and dust at 15%, with dust leading in summer at 27%.
  • A consortium led by ARAI with IIT Delhi, TERI, and IITM will produce a 2026-base emission inventory and source apportionment mapped at 500×500 metre resolution.
  • Findings will integrate with the Air Quality Early Warning System and the Decision Support System to sharpen real-time assessments and mitigation planning.
  • The report highlights gaps in vehicle pollution control as PUC tests exclude tailpipe particulate matter and many vehicles lack valid PUCC, and it invites public suggestions until February 10.
