Captain Charged After Bronx Boat Blaze Leaves 22 Rescued

Officials are investigating how the fire started following the captain’s arrest on reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated charges.

  • Fire broke out around 8 p.m. on June 7 on a 44-foot powerboat near Hart Island, sending all 22 passengers into the water.
  • The FDNY Marine 4 crew rescued three people from the water as the other 19 swam to Hart Island, where NYPD, FDNY and Coast Guard teams evacuated them to medical facilities.
  • One passenger was hospitalized in critical condition and others suffered injuries ranging from serious to minor, with all expected to recover.
  • Captain Joshua Brito, 33, was arrested at the scene and faces charges of reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated.
