- He was commissioned into the Navy in March 1954 and retired as a pioneer of naval adventure training in August 1974.
- In 1965 he led India’s first successful Everest expedition, achieving a then-world record by guiding nine climbers to the summit.
- Kohli participated in 20 major Himalayan expeditions, including the inaugural ascents of Nanda Kot and Annapurna III.
- He received the Padma Bhushan and Arjuna Award in recognition of his mountaineering achievements.
