Capitol Police Clear Harrisburg Tent City as I-83 Project Advances

The PennDOT-owned encampment is being shut to make room for an I-83 widening that enters preliminary work this fall.

Overview

  • Around 4 a.m., Capitol Police ordered roughly 20 remaining residents to leave within 24 hours or face arrest.
  • Harrisburg removed Port-O-Johns and shut off hydrant-supplied water at the site later Monday.
  • City officials said people may move only to the Miracle Community or municipal shelters, not to other locations in Harrisburg.
  • The Miracle Community has more than 65 residents and is run by Amiracle4sure as private property with registration and 24-hour monitoring, and its director barred a PennLive reporter from the site.
  • Several people are resisting relocation over rules and lost-belongings concerns as PennDOT prepares fencing and other preliminary work this fall before construction starts in 2026.
