Capitol Police Arrest Pennsylvania Man Accused of Threatening to Kill Member of Congress

Police credit a threat-assessment BOLO for the intercept, with the intended target still undisclosed.

Overview

  • U.S. Capitol Police say 43-year-old Richard Griffin of Pennsylvania was spotted from an Oct. 28 BOLO and arrested around 12:30 p.m. outside the Russell Senate Office Building.
  • Officers intercepted Griffin before he could attempt to enter through the Delaware Avenue screening point, and he was charged with threats to do bodily harm.
  • Officials report Griffin has a history of emailing a congressional office as well as other government officials and law enforcement agencies.
  • Authorities have not publicly identified the member of Congress who was threatened or said whether Griffin had any weapons at the time.
  • Rep. Robert Garcia’s office said the arrest involved death threats to the congressman, a claim not specified in the Capitol Police press release.
